Black moms: You'll want to know this
Monday, June 25, 2007
Did you know that young black women get triple-negative breast cancer, the worst type and least treatable breast cancer, more than any other women in the United States -- 39% for black women compared to 16% for white women? Did you know that triple-negative breast cancer can only be treated by chemotherapy and even then it is rarely successful? Did you know that black women can reduce their risk of getting triple-negative breast cancer if they simply breastfeed. In Saturday's Washington Post article, Drug-Resistant Breast Cancer Afflicts Blacks: Scientists Look at Genes, Breast-Feeding Patterns, Rob Stein reports the growing number of black, premeopausal women who are getting triple-negative or "basal-like" breast cancer and how the numbers are stumping doctors and scientisits. They cannot figure out why young black women are becoming more and more susceptible to this form of breast cancer.
What they do know, however, is that breastfeeding reduces the risk of women getting triple-negative breast cancer. In fact, "Longer duration breastfeeding, increasing number of children breastfed, and increasing number of months breastfeeding per child were each associated with reduced risk of basal-like breast cancer", reports an article published in last week's Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Journal.
Most of you who read this blog already know the merits of breastfeeding, so those who really need the information won't be getting it from me. My hope is that you will take this information and share it with a mother you know and save her life.

Dear All,
I work for a company who are looking to put together resources for people diagnosed specifically with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, carers of those diagnosed and health care professionals. It would be great to hear from you all with regard to what resources you would like to be made available/ information you would like to have access to/ formats you would like the info to be available in. All ideas are welcome!
I look forward to hearing from you all soon.
Kind regards,
